Marihuana, marijuana, cannabis, weed, reefer, dope, pot, ganja… the list goes on (and on, and on). The government once called it marihuana, then marijuana, and now cannabis seems to be having its moment in the spotlight. Where did the terms marijuana and cannabis come from, and which one is the ‘right’ one to use today?
Being a white, female, upper-middle class Canadian means I have privilege when it comes to using cannabis, both post-legalization, and in the past when it was criminalized. Recognizing that privilege is important as we move to legal, recreational cannabis as a country.
I think my cannabis journey is probably pretty common — I smoked in high school and into early adulthood, quit (mostly) once I had kids and entered a more complicated stage of life, and am now exploring what cannabis has to offer in my 30s.
